There are many enormous challenges facing humanity at the beginning of the 21st Century. We all know this list well:

• war and terrorism
• environmental degradation
• hunger and overpopulation
• human rights abuses
• the widening gap between rich and poor
• … and a host of others

These are very serious issues, and there are many dedicated, concerned and committed people working around the world to remedy them.

The Origin of our Problems

It is not an oversimplification to remind ourselves that these massive and life-threatening problems have been created by human beings. What human beings do to the world we first do to ourselves. The destruction we do to nature we first do to our own inner selves. The violence that we do to others we first do to our own beings. There is no avoiding it  the problems on earth originate with us.

This dire state in our world exists because of the limited level of consciousness of human beings. We have built society in our image. If we are to truly solve our problems, we must penetrate deep into the human psyche to discover the overarching psychological reasons why humanity is destroying itself and its home.

Consideration of the inner psychological state of humankind as the main contributor to our problems has been noticeably absent from the global conversation. And yet, undeniably, our psychology rules us  a situation we must begin to address if we are to arrive at the root causes of our dangerous and precarious state on earth. The root of the problem lies in the fundamental psychological imbalance of humanity, which has subsequently created an unbalanced society of unbalanced individuals.

This psychological imbalance has caused us to invert our values completely, to the point where we have forgotten our true essence – which is always good, beautiful and truthful. In fact, we have deteriorated so far that we very often directly act against our essential nature, unconsciously endeavoring to distort, deny or even destroy it in ourselves and in the world around us.
